FAQ

Aren’t sororities and fraternities only in the United States?

Many sororities and fraternities are actually international, with chapters across the United States and Canada. Although most are American-based. Delta Phi Nu is a Canadian sorority founded in Peterborough, Ontario!

Why join a sorority?

Sororities offer a lot of benefits and enhancements to your college and university experience! Joining a sorority is a great way to get involved on campus, meet people outside your program, and develop leadership skills necessary for the workforce. Plus you will gain life-long friends and sisters with whom you’ll share many amazing memories with that will last well beyond your school years.

Why join Delta Phi Nu?

Delta Phi Nu is a sisterhood deeply rooted in its core values of loyalty, knowledge and perseverance. We uphold these values and maintain a high degree of excellence academically, socially and philanthropically. We pride our selves on celebrating the uniqueness of each of our sisters and supporting them through their school career to become the best possible versions of themselves.

How do I join/What is Rush?

To join, you come out to our Rush events! Simple as that. Our Rush events are designed for you to get to know us, and for us to get to know you! Rush is a bunch of fun and free events that lets you get an idea of what Greek life is like and if it’s something you’d like to be a part of.

When is Rush?

Fall Rush is held yearly starting in September, typically the first or second week of school, exact dates and calendars are posted to each Chapter’s Instagram page. Click here to find a list of all chapters and expansions, and click the city you’re interested in to be brought to their instagram page. We also hold Rush in the winter, typically the second or third week of January, exact dates posted to each Chapter’s Instagram page closer to that time as well.

What happens after Rush?

At the end of our Rush period we host interviews. In these interviews we will ask you about your experience during Rush, your goals and other questions about yourself to help us in our final decision on who we would like to give a bid into our sisterhood.

What is a bid?

A bid is an official invitation to join our sisterhood! If you are given a bid you will then become a Pledge of Delta Phi Nu.

What if I do not receive a bid?

A lot of the time we wish we could take everyone but we also have to be cautious in our numbers. We want to give each girl who receives a bid as much attention as possible. That becomes harder with more girls, so we ask that if you do not receive a bid with us this September, that you attend our Winter rush in January and vice-versa.

What is ‘Pledge’ and what is ‘Pledging’?

A Pledge is a potential Sister who needs to learn more about our sisterhood before she become an official Sister. As a sorority we have values, expectations, and history. We feel that before you commit to us you should get to know our history. Pledge period typically lasts one month, after that there is initiation where once completed you will officially be a Delta Phi Nu Sister! Pledging is like a trial period, if you find that sorority life is not for you, you can simply withdraw at any point.

Will I be hazed?

Aside from the fact that hazing is illegal in Canada, Delta Phi Nu has a strict anti-hazing policy. We pride our selves on being an open and accepting LGBTQ+ safe space. Delta Phi Nu has and always will put the safety of its members and potential new members ahead of anything else.

Is there a cost to join?

Our Rush events are totally FREE! Rush happens in September and January every year as a two week period for you to get to know us and us to know you! If you are given a bid (invitation to join) at the end of Rush, there are fees per semester. Fees are set by the Chapter’s each summer based on the previous year’s expenses. These fees help us with; booking spaces for fundraising events, materials for events and socials, materials for sisterhood events, sisterhood apparel for you, philanthropy and more! We are committed to being accessible in respects to finances and are always able to work with you on this. If you have any questions or concerns please reach out to us!

What happens after I graduate?

Unlike traditional sororities, once you graduate from your college or university you do not have to become an alumnae member of Delta Phi Nu. If you wish, you may remain an active member until such a time as you feel you are ready to move on to the next chapter and become an Alumnae.
